Captain Christopher Begley
Captain Christopher Begley is a third generation Merchant Mariner with over 40 years in the industry. Graduate of the SUNY Maritime College in 1982 where he obtained his Third Mate’s License, Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation Management and was commissioned in the United States Naval Reserve as an Ensign.
Captain Begley received his Unlimited Master’s license in 1988 and has been sailing as Master since 1989 on wide variety of vessels and retired in 2013. His experience ranges from Salvage Tugs, Ocean Surveillance, Research, Missile Tracking, Cable Ships to the squadron flagship of the Watson Class Large Medium Speed Roll-On Roll-Off and MPF(E) Vessels in waters from the Arctic to the Equator. He has worked as a Federal Licensed Pilot in the Ports of New York and New Jersey on his vacation time from his deep-sea sailing and is continuing to pilot vessels. He is also a Federal Pilot in Little Creek, VA and Valdez, AK. He retired from the Navy Reserve as Captain in 2012 with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the MMIRG and retired as a Strategic Sealift Officer. He has performed a wide variety of Active Duty assignments including shipboard assignments on DD and LST and Ship Handling Instructor, Cargo Loading, Military Sealift Command Ashore and joint command supporting the Global War on Terrorism.
Captain Begley has worked ashore as a Cargo Surveyor for both Air and Marine claims and Federal Fire Fighter. He is still serving his community as Life Member of the Belford Engine Fire Company #1, Middletown Township Fire Department with 43 years of service and as an Exempt Firefighter in the State of New Jersey.
Since coming ashore Captain Begley has become the Business Agent for Interport Pilots Agency. He is responsible for the dispatching of pilots from Long Island Sound, New York Harbor and the Delaware Bay and River. He handles the accounts receivable and payable for the company. As the situation warrants crews the pilot boat.
Along with working for Interport Pilots he has been an Adjunct Instructor at State University of New York Maritime College. He is a certified FCC Examiner teaching the Marine Communications Course. He also teaches the Bridge Watchkeeping course and lab. He has previously taught sections of the license seminar course. Prior to joining SUNY Maritime College, Captain Begley has been imparting his knowledge to the Maritime Community as an approved United States Coast Guard Instructor. He has concentrated his teaching within New York Harbor’s Educational Institutions. Those facilities are working to bring new talent into the Maritime Industry and to promote safety and quality training for those seeking advancement on their licenses and documents. He was a certified instructor by the American Heart Association to teach all Basic Life Support Courses. He was also an Advisor to BSA Ship #3 in Verona, NJ for 5 years.
Captain Begley is the Managing Member of Bayshore Marine Consulting, LLC. Through the LLC he has taught Shipboard firefighting indoctrination the Various Connecticut paid and volunteer fire departments and to marina operators. He has developed the Bridge Resource Management for Pilots refresher for The Connecticut State Pilots, NJ State Licensed docking pilots and the Federal Licensed Pilots for Interport Pilots Agency. He has also taught shipboard security and crowd management.
Captain Begley lives in Middletown NJ with his wife Dawn and has two grown children Colleen and Caitlin.
